Why You Should Have College Experience

College can be a confusing time for a lot of incoming freshman. As a first-generation college student, I really had no idea what to expect, but the idea was to be successful. I found that being successful in college has a lot to do with getting involved with the people and environment around you. This idea of being involved is not limited to being involved in certain clubs or being in a certain social group, but I do highly encourage looking into getting involved with such groups. Although we are in college to focus on school and get the degree, it is also imperative that one creates the right network for after college; because, as we all know, it’s not what you know but who you know.

So, I’ve been fortunate enough during my tenure as a student to have been involved in a fair share of groups and events on my campus. Grades has always been my number one aim, but being involved has also been a huge part of my college experience. You might be thinking,”Oh here we go, another article about going Greek or joining some cultural club,” but being involved can start smaller than that. Even though I do recommend getting involved with Greek life or joining a cultural club, getting involved could be something as small as forming a study group with your classmates, going to your professor’s office hours, or attending open mic night in your student union. Opportunities to connect and network can blind side you, but they can be some of the best things to happen to you.

As a first-time-in-college student, I didn’t have anyone to tell me how to get involved or which clubs or people could be beneficial to me. So, me meeting others in my class and talking to them about school and extracurricular activities is where it all started for me. A conversation about an assignment could quickly change to someone telling you that they are involved with such-and-such association; this conversation could lead you to attending a meeting and meeting their advisor; their advisor could happen to be a very influential person on campus or in the community and further benefit your college career. Something like this could happen and could lead to job possibilities, or you figuring out the answer to looming question,”What do you want to be when you grow up?”

I do advocate for student involvement on campus, whether it be Greek life, Student Government, an honor society, or a cultural club; join something. But do not simply join something; go in with the intent of taking a leadership position within the organization and ultimately making an impact. This mindset will help you get the most out of every organization you become a part of. So don’t simply be a member of an organization, be on the executive board. You will meet more influential people this way, such as administrators, faculty, staff, and other people who can influence your college experience and ultimately shape your future. Some of my biggest opportunities have come from faculty or professors giving me recommendations or being a reference on a job application, but you don’t meet these people unless you engage in the community around you.

As a senior I look back on my college journey and I see many places I would’ve done better, but I also see the tremendous growth that I have achieved. A majority of my growth came from interacting with those around me. Anyone in college can simply go to class and leave, but you’re cheating yourself out of a meaningful college experience. Optimizing your college experience includes the process of engaging those around you and really making an impact and leaving a legacy. Engaging others, especially your professors and administrators can open doors for you, that you may not even thought a possibility. The idea of involvement is something each student should grasp in order to optimize their college experience.

All About Canadian Education System

The Canadian education system consists of three levels. The first level is known as the elementary level, the second is called the secondary level and the third is called the post-secondary education level. If you are in Canada or you have plans to go there, we suggest that you read up on the education system over there, especially if you want to go there for education. Let’s know more about the education system in Canada.

The Education System

In Canada, governments at provincial and territorial levels govern education. Therefore, there is a little difference between each education system. For example, the difference is that the grades where the levels start and end are different. Each province and territory offers free education for 12 years. However, for Quebec, the free education is offered for 11 years. Based on the province, education is a must for age 15 and 18.

· Elementary

Typically, kids aged 5 enter kindergarten. In elementary schools, kids study from grade one to grade 6. Afterwards, the students study for 2 years. Afterwards, the students go directly to high school.

· Secondary

Most often, secondary school is called high school. In these schools, students study from grade 9 to grade 12. Afterwards, the students study in CEGEP for 24 months and then go to university.

· Post-secondary

This level of education consists of career college, grade school, university and community college.

Programs for language

In Canada, language programs are provided at private language schools, universities, colleges, high schools and middle schools. Since English is the international language, more importance is given to teach this language across Canada.


Districts: In Canada, the division of provinces is done based school districts. Moreover, school districts include school boards that implement curriculum and policy established by the province. Usually, a school district provides services to a couple of towns or cities based on their size.

Religious affiliation

Schools can be Christian, Catholic or secular. However, in some provinces, you can find different school boards for both non-religious and religious schools. So, students from religious families can also go to the school based on their religious affiliation.

Private and public

The education system in Canada consists of public schools as well as private schools. The public schools receive funds from the government. On the other hand, private schools don’t get funded by the government and students have to pay fees to study in private school. Moreover, at the post secondary level, students pay a considerably smaller amount of tuition fee than in private universities.

Knocking Up Your College Tuition

I started college in the US in the summer for one reason: it was 3 times cheaper than starting in the fall or winter semester. At Utah Valley University (UVU) and other universities, international students can pay in-state tuition only during the summer, so I took advantage of that. However, it was June 2008 and I did not have the $6,000 USD to pay for my fall semester. I started talking with international and career advisors at my university, but no one could really help me and I could not get any scholarships since it was only my first year. These tough situations are what make the difference between a hustler and a quitter, and I decided to become a hustler.

I kept looking for advice until I met Kyle Reyes, a leader in the multicultural office at UVU. He really motivated me and told me how other immigrants were able to raise money for their tuition: by knocking on doors and asking for donations in rich neighborhoods. It may sound crazy, but it was my best option. So I took it. I prepared a letter with my story and dreams, attached a UVU envelope so people could send me donations (I will discuss more about the letter in another article) and started going to neighborhoods by the Utah Valley mountains.

I did not have a car and I was very shy, so my friend Rene from Peru gave me rides and helped me knock on doors. Many people did not open, others closed the door immediately or said they did not have money (they were living in mansions). But a hustler does not give up, so I continued going every weekend, and when my friend could not give me a ride, I went jogging and delivered my letter to many houses during the summer.

I still remember the moment when I was walking by the dining hall at UVU when Kyle told me “congrats, you received some donations!” I could not believe it. People were sending checks for $30, $50, and $80 dollars to help with my tuition. This motivated me much more to keep going. Some people also gave me donations when I was telling them my story by their door.

I raised around $700 USD and since then, the universe has gravitated towards my goal and everything has worked out. I was able to enroll on a tuition payment plan, saved some money from my part time job cleaning floors and toilets, and received some money from my family. That’s how I was able to pay my first semester as an out of state student. Most importantly, that’s how I learned to be a hustler. To be resourceful and to not give up on my goals.

Now you can use crowdfunding sites to raise money for your education and since you can reach more people, you may be able to raise a larger fund. You will not have to go knocking on doors, but you will have to prepare and promote your campaign very well. I think a combination of both will give you the best experience and results.

Going College To USA

The variety and sheer volume of universities in the US mean that you can be more confident to find the more suitable institution. To study in the US depending on your study level and subject you may have to take an admission test, like the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for the graduate level and SAT for the undergraduate level.

There are four years to complete undergraduate degrees at US universities. Though competitive and complicated, the college admissions process is not an unwinnable game. There are virtually no benefits to being dishonest; meanwhile, cheating leaves you vulnerable to endless issues and negative repercussions. What many students do not realize-and what we would like to highlight here-is that it is remarkably easy to identify plagiarism. Chances are, if you do not write your own application essay, you’ll get caught – and here’s why.

What Counts as Plagiarism?

That said, it is wildly unfair to you as well. By cheating, you admit to believing that you need someone else to help you get into the right school when, in fact, just the opposite is true. The only person who can get you into the best school for you is-you guessed it-you. If you wind up being placed at a college based on work that isn’t your own, it could certainly come back to bite you later. Ultimately, you should want to end up at an institution where you are accepted on your own merit-these are the institutions that can best service you, your work ethic, and your specific set of strengths and weaknesses, and you need to apply honestly.

What’s more, you put yourself at a disadvantage by hiring someone else to write your personal statement for you, since the ultimate goal of the essay is to share intimate information about your personality-something you can do better than anyone else. Often, when students allow parents or tutors to revise their personal statement with too heavy a hand, the idiosyncrasies of the student are erased.

Why Not Plagiarize? The Practical Approach

We’ll start off by saying that it is usually fairly transparent when a student hasn’t written his or her personal statement. If the voice of your personal essay sounds inconsistent with that of other sections of your application, an adcom might notice and investigate further. College applications present you with many opportunities to voice your opinions-in the personal statement, through supplemental essays, or at an interview-and college admissions committees are particularly attuned to your voice throughout the process; this is because, ultimately, adcoms are trying to arrive at an admissions decision based upon your personality and mode of thinking. With all that has been going on during the past few years in the political area, some students serving in student government and those with Political Science or History as a major may think about going into Politics.

People who choose that direction may be motivated by a number of things. Among them may be the desire to:

– Assume a position of power

– Boost their ego

To be successful, students must possess the personal qualities that seem to permeate politics today. Of course, some of these qualities may be good, while others tend to be bad for the people they represent.

– Trustworthy

– Hard Working

– Good communication skills

– Intelligent

– Self-confident

– Able to build agreement and support

– Always concerned with the best interests of Our Country

Less Admirable Qualities:

– Is Willing to Tell Lies about everything and anything

– Obfuscates information and facts to make them difficult to understand

– Talks out of Both Sides of His/Her Mouth, whichever is expedient

– Puts their Political Party ahead of the People they represent

– Takes Money in return for their support and votes

– Allows Lobbyists, Special Interests and PAC’s to influence their votes

– Sponsors Bills that support Large Organizations but Hurt Average People

– Puts Personal Gain ahead of Constituents and Our Country

– Ignores the National Debt

– Ignores the need for a Balanced Budget

– Favors the Rich over the Middle-Class Workers

– Tacks on PORK to desirable and important Bills

– Willing to Inflate Costs, as long as it Benefits Them

– Is willing to obstruct investigations to protect cronies

– Makes unsubstantiated accusations against opponents

– Plays fast and loose with facts

– Denies responsibility for anything that goes wrong

– Quick to hurl insults at anyone who disagrees

– Unwilling to work with members of the other Party on any issue

– Willing to blindly follow Party dictates

Of course, some people go into politics with the best intentions but end up being seduced by money, power and personal gain. Others are pressured and intimidated into submission by other politicians in their own party. Sometimes, it is not a pretty picture.

Those with political power seem to be motivated by one thing – staying in power. It seems that they are willing to do anything in order to accomplish that goal. Either way, aspiring politicians should ask themselves:

– Are my political intentions good and honorable?

– Will I always put my Constituents, State and Country first?

– Will I work to eliminate unethical behavior, corruption and improper personal gain from politics?

Some students see a broken system and want to change the way things work in politics today. Other students may only see the personal benefits that can result from holding political office. Which person is hiding in you?

Tips Making Letter For College Student

Your child is heading off to college. This is a bittersweet moment for you. It’s a moment you have probably been planning for almost all your child’s life. Now comes the time when you have to say goodbye. It’s now time where you pack up belongings and send your precious one to another home, a home away from you, a home that is new, full of beginnings, and full of things you worry about.

Every parent who sends a child off to college goes through this. Your child is also going through a lot of emotions. You may have been thinking of a special way to send your child off with something to remember you and your family. One idea is a letter. To help, I have written one that may give you some ideas. You have my permission to copy the letter and use it to encourage your student. Just make sure you insert their name in the letter.

The moment we have been planning for so long is finally here. You are going to college. This moment has been years in the making and you have done it. You have worked so hard to get to this point and this is an achievement you have truly earned. All your assignments in school, all the extra activities, all the extra work, have brought you to this point. I want you to know that I am very, very proud of you. And I want you to be proud of this moment too. This is your moment to shine and I want you to shine brightly.

Remember, you are leaving home but you’re not leaving us. Leaving home is a rite of passage, a part of becoming an adult. I look back over the years where I watched over you and did my best to keep you safe and loved. I remember the child who asked questions about everything and who wanted to be adventurous. You are now embarking on your next great adventure. Enjoy the journey.

College is a place where you can spread your wings and grow. It’s where you can flex your intellectual muscles and soak in the knowledge that will surround you. You are entering a time of your life that is exciting and rewarding. You are beginning a chapter of your life where many people make lifelong friends. Choose them wisely.

If you ever doubt yourself in college I want you to remember this one thing. You are ready. You are ready for college and I believe in you. Believe in what you can accomplish and you will accomplish great things.

This is your time. While you will be missed, it is great to know you will be working toward your future. Remember it is your future. You will be making decisions in college that will affect how your life will be years from now. Make choices that will be good for you; your choice of study should reflect you, not me or anyone else. Get all the information you need to make good choices. I trust your judgment. Now you trust yourself.

When your eyes are red from studying too late or from crying because you miss home, I want you to know that I love you and I am so very proud of you. Do not give up. Remember you can be a success in college. Look at what you have already accomplished. You graduated high school and made it to college! Learn, learn, learn while you are at college. You will have so many doors open to you while there. This is your time.

How To Get Job After College

Since so many students have large college loans, they must be concerned about the employers and jobs that will be available to them when they graduate. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the students who are not burdened with loans are not also concerned with landing good jobs. I’ve said this before, but it still holds true. In the end, most college students only want three things:

1. A good college education

2. An enjoyable college experience

3. A great job when they graduate

Unfortunately, there are colleges that have trouble achieving all three. Some colleges are known for academic excellence. Others offer large numbers of activities, clubs and parties. Only a few have a reputation for having systems in place to ensure that large numbers of students obtain well-paying jobs with desirable employers that will have advancement opportunities.

Until college leaders change their minds and place a greater value on student employment success, they will not change their behavior. Nobody can effectively change their behavior before they change their minds.

Skeptical leaders always resist change. It scares them. Change usually scares us all until we understand it and believe that the change will make things better for us. That is the challenge.

How can college leaders identify and understand the changes that will both result in greater student employment success and make things better for themselves? Money, manpower and time are issues that are always brought up. However, the most important factors are “wanting to make things better” and “looking for and identifying the things that have to be changed.” Colleges that can’t or won’t do one or both of those things will never improve the employment success of their students.

To improve student employment success, colleges must:

1. Recognize that students are quite limited in their knowledge about job search preparation activities and what, how, when and why they should be done.

2. Accept the fact that the college (a learning institution) is where students spend most of their time and where they expect to receive the information, help and guidance they will need for their employment search.

3. Agree that job search preparation instruction and guidance is in large part the responsibility of the college as a whole, not just students and the people in Career Services.

4. Understand that students must compete against other candidates for the best jobs in their fields of interest. Simply having earned a degree with good grades is often not enough.

5. Believe that their college will benefit when larger numbers of students land desirable jobs with respected employers.

To Help Students Find Greater Employment Success, Colleges Should:

6. Help students identify and select a career direction that matches up with their capabilities and interests not later than their sophomore year. When students wait too long to identify a career direction, there may be little or no time left for clearly focused job search preparation activities. Late decisions may also require extra time in college and additional college loans.

7. In the 1st or 2nd year of college, ask students to purchase and read a book that explains the entire employment process, including job search preparation strategies and efforts. Career Services should suggest one.

8. Early on, require students to draft a personal budget for independent living after college. That will make them think about the coming expenses and give them an idea about the minimum starting salary they will require. A sample budget form can be supplied by Career Services, so students can fill in the blanks.

Having a realistic budget, will encourage students to determine two things: 1) Does the selected career direction have desirable entry level jobs that will meet their budget requirements? and, 2) Do those jobs have good growth potential and a career path?

Qualified students should not blindly enter careers and accept employment offers that make it too difficult for them to live on their own and pay back college loans or offer little salary and career growth potential.

9. Help students select a major and minor that will support their career direction and the jobs that are of interest.

10. Help students prepare a written plan of action that includes the activities and experiences they will participate in to make themselves more attractive to their target employers. Colleges can start by providing each student with a generic example of a step-by-step plan.

11. Offer job search preparation classes to students. These classes should cover every aspect of job search preparation, review the contents of the book that has been selected, help students build and utilize their job search network, create a résumé that is focused on accomplishments and successes and also help students develop the stories and examples they will use during interviews.

12. Have each student research and identify a group of jobs in their selected field of interest. (Having a clear target will make the following steps easier for students to achieve.)

13. Have each student research and identify a list of employers that will have opportunities for students with their own job interests. In that way, students can pursue opportunities with the specific employers that are of interest to them. In almost every case, students must chase employers not the reverse.

14. Help students identify the specific things that their target employers will need, want and expect of employment candidates. (Students are more attractive to their target employers when they have prepared for and addressed their needs, wants and expectations.)

15. Help students research, identify and retain lists of Job Banks, Search Firms and Web Sites that can be useful, as they conduct their searches for employment. Students with similar career directions can work together as a team and share their results. (Initial lists for students in every major should be available from Career Services.)

16. Coach and encourage students, as they execute their action plans. Every campus employee can help with this. In fact, everyone in the college community can help with this. However, college Alumni should be ideal for this aspect of job search preparation. That means that the college has to make a special effort to involve successful alumni in this process.

17. Work to build a larger and larger pool of employers that will provide part-time jobs, internships, co-op assignments, work-study programs and summer jobs for students in each and every major. Work experience and job performance are extremely important to interviewers and their hiring employers. Students with job-related work experience, highly rated job performance and solid work references will always attract attention from potential employers.

18. Work to build a larger and larger pool of respected employers that will visit the campus to recruit students. The goal should also be to find and invite a wide variety of employers so some will be interested in students with the less recruited majors. Many colleges are not good at finding employers that are interested in students from the less recruited majors. In fact, on every campus there will be students who don’t have even one campus interview.

19. Develop a long list of employment opportunities for graduating students in every major by requiring everyone who is in any way associated with their institution (College Leaders, Professors, Administrators, Hourly Employees, Students, Parents, Alumni, Suppliers, Vendors, Local Employers and Community Leaders) to use their networks to identify jobs that pay well and have a substantial employee benefits package.

20. Help students pay close attention to their job search preparation activities, job performance and accomplishments. Students must be prepared to compete for the better paying jobs with career potential.

Job offers are not won or lost during interviews. They are earned in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of college. As students get involved, participate, perform, lead and work, they can take advantage of opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities and add to their list of impressive accomplishments. The best candidates talk about their performance and offer examples during interviews.

21. As students enter their senior year, they should be given multiple opportunities to participate in mock interviews. They will need to practice presenting their selling points, successes and accomplishments. When students tell compelling stories about their college and work experiences and performance, employers will pay attention.

These suggestions will result in a new culture on campus. Students who land great jobs will speak highly of the college and will be better able and more likely to make donations. Furthermore, as high potential applicants learn about the employment successes of your students, they will want to attend your college.

Student employment success is a win-win for students and colleges alike. That’s why colleges should give more consideration to the efforts and services that will result in more and better jobs for their students.
